From Waste to Energy: Indocement Plant 11 Innovation Earns Global Recognition

Indocement Plant 11 Innovation Wins Recognition at the Heidelberg Materials Innovation Challenge 2025–2026The Waste to Energy Innovation for Low Carbon Cement initiative won recognition at the Heidelberg Materials Innovation Challenge 2025–2026. This project is an innovation that enhances the use of municipal waste as an alternative energy source to support low-carbon cement production.

In the global competition, which brought together 165 of the best innovation ideas from Heidelberg Materials units around the world, the Plant 11 team became one of 13 finalists that advanced to the final round and received an award in the Sustainable Application & Performance category.

This achievement reinforces the position of Indocement Plant 11 as a proactive industry player in addressing environmental challenges through innovation in converting municipal waste into alternative energy. This effort not only supports low-carbon cement production, but also contributes to reducing waste volume and carbon emissions.

In response to the large volume of urban waste and the cement industry’s challenge of lowering carbon emissions, the team developed a system to utilize refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from Jakarta’s waste as a partial substitute for fossil fuel in the clinker production process. Through various modifications and optimizations to the hot disc reactor (HDR) system, material transportation, and the combustion process, the team succeeded in creating an operation that is stable, safe, and sustainable.

This success would not have been possible without the support and contributions of many parties. The Plant 11 team therefore extends its appreciation to Indocement management and all colleagues who provided support throughout the assessment process, as well as to everyone who contributed technical assistance during the final presentation stage.
